Can my child benefit from OT?

Occupational therapy (OT) can provide exercises and strategies to improve infant/toddler and childhood development, prewriting skills, fine motor development, handwriting, emotional regulation, bilateral coordination, executive functioning and social skills to name a few. OT can also help with sensory integration. The sensory processing system is part of the central nervous system and when regulated, can help the child interact with and be successful in their environment.

The dysregulated student might exhibit the following:

  • Fidgets during learning time

  • Distracts others

  • Chews on their shirt/pencils

  • Messy eater

  • Gets too close to others

  • Makes noises during learning time

  • Covers ears with unexpected noises

  • Avoids swinging/movement

  • Seeks movement

  • Disorganized and scattered

  • Poor body awareness

  • Poor time management

  • Poor social skills
